» Ricky Gervais on "Throwing Away 1 Billion"
(via @videogum via @corypalmer)
SPOILER: He claims in 1999, he could have written Night at the Museum, which has grossed over $1 billion as a franchise. No mention that the book, The Night at the Museum by Milan Trenc was written in 1993.
Videogum posted a link to this article, with the amendment “Ricky Gervais really needs to stop writing about himself. It is completely unbearable.” Not only unbearable, but unnecessary.
He starts by talking about how great his ideas and accomplishments have been, including the decision to only do 12 episodes of The Office (not the show itself), the message of atheism in The Invention of Lying, and the fact that he bullied rich and famous movie stars at the Golden Globes.
Peppered with his tired smug act, he talks about getting the idea to have the exhibits in a museum come to life, which is a thought everyone has when they go to a museum. Try it sometime.
The moral of this fluff piece is that he didn’t work hard on that screenplay, but he did work hard on The Office when he created that years later. So, if you work hard, success will come your way. Did you know Ricky Gervais created The Office, by the way? I don’t know if many people have heard.
What bugs me so much about this guy is that he is funny, and I do like the things he creates. However, he will take every opportunity to write about himself and pat himself on the back for creating The Office (Fun fact: Ricky Gervais not only starred in The Office, but also co-created and co-wrote The Office with some other man). He will also take every opportunity to remind the people of earth that he doesn’t believe in God, or any other gods, just in case people’s faith is swayed by personal values of the co-creator of 2004 Golden Globe-winner The Office. Golden Globes! I bet they regret giving Ricky a Golden Globe after he made fun of all those powerful actors when he was the host of the show!
There doesn’t seem to be a reason for this article in the first place, other than to pay Ricky Gervais to remind people of Ricky Gervais and the quality line of Ricky Gervais products. It’s almost insulting these days to tell people to work harder and they’ll succeed, because most of the world is working their asses off just to survive. We don’t need the threat of losing a billion dollar idea, we have bills and debts and children and pets and jobs at offices with difficult bosses. Hey, wait a minute! That gives me a great idea!
